The origin of Great Danes, like many other varieties of dogs, is so obscure that all investigations have resulted only in speculative theories. But the undoubted antiquity of this dog is proven by the fact that representatives of a breed sufficiently similar to be considered his ancestors are found in some of the more ancient Egyptian monuments.
Some years ago a controversy arose over the right career appointment when the Germans claimed the title from "Deutsche Dogge". Germany had several types of large dogs, as Hatzrude, Saufanger, Ulmer Dogge, and Rottweiler Metzgerhund, but while there, as in other European countries, another great race, but much nobler and more thoroughbred, known as the Great Dane.
When after the war of 1870, national sentiment has been strongly pressed in the veins of reunited Germany, the Germans were cynologists in search of a pet dog, and this end the Great Dane has been renamed "Deutsche Dogge" and elected as the champion of German dogdom. For several years this race has probably been crossed indiscriminately.
The Great Dane was introduced into this country spasmodically some thirty-five years ago when he was commonly called the Boarhound, or German Mastiff, and for a time the breed had to undergo a trial period in the "Foreign Class" at the dog shows, but won quickly out of favor, and eighties a Club Great Dane was formed and the breed has become one of the most popular larger dogs.
The Kennel Club has ranked Great Danes among non-hunting dogs, probably because we can not find a decent career value, but until now has the instincts and qualities of a hunting dog, and has been particularly useful for hunting big game in hot climates, where it sits nicely.
Respecting the temperament of the Great Dane and his suitability as a partner was the best writers in praise and condemnation. To their credit it must be said that in natural intelligence it is surpassed by very few other dogs. Has a more imposing, and not, as some other big breeds, slobber mouth, which is a particularly unpleasant peculiarity when a dog is kept in the house. Moreover, we must admit, with almost the strength of a tiger he combines the excitement of a burrow, and probably ill-trained Danish Grande is a very dangerous animal.
It is not enough to teach him at random would do a little dog under control, but even as a partner, should be trained systematically, and, given their remarkable intelligence, this is not difficult of accomplishment.
