The Great Dane breed is estimated at 400 years, but dogs seem the Great Dane is shown in drawings in Egyptian tombs dating to 2200BC. These were the dogs Mastiff type and leg shorter than the modern Great Dane. These are the Germans who developed the breed in the dog we know today. Some sources suggest that race was established by Mastiff, boarhound, Greyhound and Irish Wolfhound. At first they were used as bull baiters, and then became popular with the nobility and were used for hunting wild boar and deer. In 1800, these were commonly used for hunting big game. The United Kingdom United Danish club started in 1885 and the American version in 1889.

The Great Dane has a short shiny coat, thick, require little maintenance. It is a relatively clean dog that is convenient, because a bathroom can be difficult. There are six shows acceptable colors for the race are:

  • Fawn – yellow gold with a black mask
  • Brindle – Fawn and stripes Chevron black
  • Blue – pure steel blue without white markings
  • Black – Pure Black Iced
  • Harlequin – Base color white with irregular in black
  • Coat – Black and white with a black robe and white head and muzzle, chest and neck

Other colors exist but are not allowed in the ring, and therefore not encouraged by the farmers.
Despite the great Dane has set the appearance of the breed has a friendly nature, mix well with other dogs and pets and children. They become very close and loyal to non-owners, family members and frequent visitors. They are active dogs and need to be exercised regularly. These dogs are quick to alert the family of any approach to foreigners who make excellent watchdogs, although not bark much. It is important to start training and socialization at an early age as they grow very quickly in large dogs and can become dominant and aggressive to other animals if not trained.

As with all deep chest dogs, the dog is prone to gastric torsion or swelling, this can be avoided by taking precautions with food animals. Some suggest that a high power plate reduces the risk of swelling, but other studies say it increases the chances of disease. By not exercising immediately before or after eating reduces risk. The race may also have problems with hip dysplasia that can be controlled with exercise and nutrition. Radiography of the parents usually can certify whether their hips are healthy kids. Like all these big dogs have a slower metabolism and therefore have less energy and eat less per pound of smaller dog breeds. Like all dogs, all white, many whites are deaf. Average life of the race is between 8 and 12 years.
