St. Bernard has a long history of slavery to mankind. Its origins are the Swiss valleys around the Centennial Hospice of St. Bernard, where the original dogs used as guard dogs and companions of the community of monks living and working in the hospice.

Hospice was used as a stopover for travelers crossing between the stages of the Swiss Alps with Italy. Because of the treacherous snow, travelers are often confused or lost and tragically died. Finally, some monks began to train these dogs large and soft to go on a mission to save these passers. These dogs seem to possess an inherent desire to seek and locate lost and missing, and also possessed the kind of coat that not only protected high winds, but not cake with snow and ice.

Dogs have worked in teams of four. Two are sleeping with the victim and keep him hot lick one's face to try to keep it alive, and the other would return to the hostel to put the rescue teams of man.
