poodles

We are all familiar with seeing poodles that have been clipped and groomed in a number of weird and wonderful ways. In fact, when it comes to showing poodles, specified clips are stated in all kennel clubs’ breed standards. It should come as no surprise that the clipping of poodles is not a new phenomenon. Actually, there are paintings that contain poodles sporting the popular Continental clip as far back as 1533. But where on Earth did this strange tradition come from?

The poodle became a ‘must have’ fashion accessory in France, when French noblewomen became fascinated with the breed and began to style their dogs’ fur in ever increasingly outrageous and flamboyant styles. The breed subsequently became known as the national dog of France and, today, is sometimes called the French poodle. However, the origins of the poodle began in Germany and their bizarre hair cuts were born out of practical necessity.

Working Dogs

The poodle did not begin life as a play thing of wealthy French women with a penchant for decorating animals. Instead, the breed was designed as a retrieving dog. Their name stems from the German word ‘pudel’, which translates as ’splashes in water’ and, perhaps unsurprisingly, is also the source of the English word ‘puddle’.

However, the Germans who needed a dog to retrieve water fowl had a problem, because the poodle required a thick coat to survive the harsh German winters, but when left to grow naturally a poodle’s fur forms long cords that absorb water like a big sponge. Subsequently, the dog’s agility was constrained and their speed of retrieval was greatly effected.

Therefore, poodle owners would clip their dogs’ fur to reduce the amount of water being absorbed and allow the dog to remain light and agile. However, it was necessary to leave the dog with patches of fur unclipped to keep his, or her, internal organs, chest and joints warm in cold weather. Allegedly, a poodle’s top knot was also first used while still working as a retriever. It is believed that the purpose of the top knot was to identify the dog from a distance. Owners would tie a colored ribbon to the dog’s head so that when it was retrieving from the water it was still visible.

And so began the tradition of clipping and grooming poodles, which, as discussed above, really took off in France when the dog became part of Parisian fashion.

Today, there are three varieties of poodle: standard, miniature and toy. All of which are known to model numerous trims from simple maintenance clips to extravagant styles. Some of the more popular poodle styles include the sporting cut, Dutch trim, summer trim, English Saddle, Continental cuts and lamb trim, to name but a few.

Just Eye Candy?

Due to their immaculate appearance, poodles are often regarded as merely a froufrou animal. However, poodles are so much more than just eye candy or an extension of their owners’ fashion sense. On the contrary, the poodle is one of the most intelligent breeds of dog, coming second only to the Border Collie in studies to assess dog intelligence. In fact, the poodle still proves its usefulness as a working dog, as it displays particular talents as a sniffer dog and is used by customs officers to locate contraband. Additionally, poodles are effective hearing dogs, guide dogs and therapy dogs.

Moreover, the poodle is an excellent family pet. Not only are these dogs extremely intelligent, but they are also sweet natured, patient, eager to please and are known to be good with children and other animals.

You can’t think of a teen party theme, and your teen’s birthday is coming up soon. Don’t worry, it’s easy to find some fun teen party themes. Use something familiar as the theme for your next party. TV shows are popular and so are sports, so pick a few of your favorites to consider. Here’s a list of a few of my favorite ideas for a teenage get together.

Survivor party ideas are very popular with teenagers and tweens. Have the kids compete in survivor like game competitions and challenges. Have them build a tent out of the materials you supply. Then have them Hurricane test it. Have the opposing tribe throw buckets of water on the tent to see if it can stand up to Tropical storm or hurricane strength winds and water. Have them try to fill a bottle with water using a homemade relay system. Have them make their own system out of coconut shells.

Plan a scavenger hunt in your neighborhood. Put items that will be useful in making homemade tools for food and shelter. The Survivor theme is a fun party idea to decorate for. Tiki lamps, grass skirts, Hawaiian leis are all perfect for a tropical island look. Serve tropical party dishes too. There’s chicken and rice, pineapples and mangos, served in a pineapple shell. You can find an easy dip recipe to make for the fruit using yogurt. Add some tiny umbrellas to your party drinks and your on your way to the islands, where Survivor challenges await your guests.

Have an Oldies but Goodies party. Teens like to dress up and what’s more fun that a poodle skirt or a greaser outfit? The 1950’s or the 60’s were fun filled days and the clothes of these eras make for some great homemade costume ideas that are fairly easy to put together. The music is also quite easy to find and play at your party. Pick the soundtrack from Grease or choose the King himself, Elvis Presley if the 50’s are your favorite. Like something a little funkier? Then I guess its 1960’s party ideas for you. Get the Woodstock soundtrack for some fun music sounds. Bell bottom pants and a tie dyed T shirt will work and so will a mini skirt, an afro wig and some big glasses. Bangle jewelry and head scarves finish the look. For the 50’s poodle skirts and bowling shirts should do the trick.

Teens love video games and that makes them the perfect teen party theme. Which video gaming system do you have? Can you borrow one or two extra from your friends? Buy the birthday teen the latest video game and let the contests begin. There are several gaming videos you probably already own that you can use too.

Movie Night is always a good teen party theme. Make lots of popcorn, chill plenty of soda and get some comfy pillows to throw around the TV. Put out some candy from the movie theatre and you will be set for your mini marathon. Make sure to have some pizza or subs waiting at the snack bar for intermission.

When you are planning a teen party make sure to include your kids! You will probably get the best teen party ideas from them, so make sure you ask which is their favorite theme and what decorations and party food they think their friends will like. See how easy teen party themes can be!

poodle cuts?

my 16mo old mini poodle;s hair is not like all bald spots like in the shows. he has long fur on his ears and tail.
and the rest is all short and curly.
is this one of the “poodle cuts”? or is this just a diffrent shave?
ark, yes it is a kennel cut i looked on the site that a answer suggested before and that one looks most like his cut not the puppy cut.
i think kennel cuts or puppy cuts are cutest the other ones look snobby.

If the body is one length, it is probably what is called a kennel cut. Some folks call it a puppy cut, but actually, the puppy cut has longer hair that slopes up the neck to the top of the head.

ADD: Snobby? Did you know that the other cuts actually serve a purpose for the original purpose of the breed? (To retrieve)- The hair is shaved in the bald areas to reduce wate absorption and water resistance to them moving, but left long around points (like wrists and hip joints) where the dog would lose more heat in the water- and left long around the body to protect the major organs of the heart and lungs.

I’m flying with my dog from NYC to Denver on United Airlines. What health certificate do I need to bring?

I already made reservations for my toy poodle to go with me in the passenger cabin. I called United Airlines to ask them what health certificates specfically I had to bring, but the person on the other line was lost and didn’t know what I was talking about. So, has anyone flown domestically (USA) with a small dog as carry-on on United? Do I need to take my dog to the vet within 10 days of departure for a health certificate? And I’m going to be in Denver for 7 days, so do I have to take him to the vet there, too, for another documentation? Thanks! Is there anything else I should know from experienced flyers?

Because your poodle will be in the cabin with you you do not need to worry about the weather. All he/she needs is a pre-flight check-up and certificate showing current good health and dates of all shots. There are no other travel requirements in Mainland USA . I know Hawaii does require more.
Ask your vet whether or not your pet can travel “fasting”. It would be best (dog-doo does stink and your cabin mates can’t open a window) If yes, then all you’ll need is to bring a bottle of either your own tap-water or buy some filtered water and keep her on that. Dog tummies are more sensitive to changes. Be sure to put a absorbent pad and fluffy towel on the bottom of carrier and a comforting toy (like a non-food chew bone).

ok we just adopted a mini poodle thats owner past away a couple days ago. he seems really nice, but very quiet and lays around.. except for when my twin girls 4yrs old get close to him and move quickly. is this dog not gonna be good with kids or is he just nervous, we got him about 3 hrs ago.. lol please let me know, he has already barked and nipped at both of them… please help. i will have to get rid of him if he is gonna do this
but what about the kids i just don’t want the kids to get bit.. my kids are gonna be gone for 2 weeks so maybe that will give him time to get used to us then the kids will come back and maybe he will be ok with them do u think?
he is doing a little better but now he is gettin aggressive if u come anywhere near him or walk by, barking and comes towards u. he hasn’t really done it to much to me more my hubby and kids.. i hope i don’t have to get rid of him.. help

Poodles are generally very good with children. You have to remember that this little guy hasn’t got a clue where he is nor who you or your children are. He is very likely to be expecting his owner to come along, pick him up and take him home to where things are familiar.
Poodles attach themselves very closely to their owners and it will take some time for him to accept that his owner isn’t coming back and that you’re his new family.
Please be patient with this little guy. Treat him with love and respect. Teach your girls to give him a wide birth for now. When he is ready to play then he will show that.
